Okavango Delta, Botswana

Okavango Delta, Botswana

The Okavango Delta is one of the world’s largest inland water systems. It stems from Angola in the north where the rivers are filling up from the rain in the mountains and then working its way into Botswana where it spills out into the Kalahari Desert, here it creates a thriving wildlife and spectacular sceneries. Millions of years ago the Okavango river used to flow into a large inland lake called Lake Makgadikgadi which is now the Makgadikgadi Pans. It is said to take six months for the water to travel from the mountains in Angola to Maun in the south of the Okavango Delta, providing an all year travel destination.

There is plenty wildlife here depending on the seson. Animals that can be seen include: crocodile, red lechwe, sitatunga, elephant, wild dogs, buffalo, wattled crane and vast amount of birdlife.

Safari activities can be done by water on mokoros, a dug out canoe which is "poled" is the best way of exploring the vast network of waterways. Boat game viewing is done where the channels are wider. Further options to do game viewing include 4x4 game viewing vehicles, with night drives available in the private concession areas. Most lodges provide walking safaris with game viewing flights using both light aircraft and helicopter. One unusual way of going game viewing on an elephant back safari.
