Gauteng, South Africa

Johannesburg at NightGauteng is well known as South Africa’s and Africa’s economic, financial, business and entertainment epi-centre. It's vibrant lively mix of diversity is the driving force of Southern Africa as a whole. It is the smallest and the wealthiest province in South Africa; it also has a unique fusion of democratic and traditional values. The word Gauteng is a Sotho word which means "place of gold" but it also is a Dutch word meaning "gold".

Gauteng has two capital towns which are the opposite from each other. Pretoria is more laid back with its Jacaranda lined streets and serene old buildings. It also consists of historical monuments such as the Union Buildings, Melrose House and the Voortrekker Monument. Johannesburg on the other hand is filled with fast paced activities. Its history starts in 1886 after the discovery of gold in Witwatersrand hence the city is more diverse than the other cities in Southern Africa.

Its attractions include Soweto the largest black township in South Africa situated in Johannesburg where one can visit the Sharpeville memorial site and pass Nelson Mandela's homes. The incredible Cradle of Humankind in Sterkfontein which is the famous World Heritage site is startling. For more educational and historical information one can visit the Apartheid museum. Gauteng offers a different and tranquil accommodation that will suit every traveler from the five star hotels to the comfortable guest houses and lodges.
